There are many memories connected with the time this album came about. 1995 was definitely not one of my happiest years, some health issues, other self-inflicted stupid problems and struggling with my first solo concertswere not helping. But there were some really good moments too, John Duncan, Jim O'Rourke and the enigmatic Gary Tod Sylvester of the Cortical Foundation came to stay with me repeatedly. Gary let me try his amazing binaural microphone which I used for a lot of the field recordings that are present in these pieces, which makes headphone listening a different experience. There's a moment in "III" where Petermann, the cat that I shared my place with for over 19 years can be heard. When I played the piece for him he was so shocked at the sound of his own voice coming from the stereo that he tried to get inside one of my speakers.

Before starting out on this I had just discarded an entire album (now destroyed) I had recorded in late '94, the only surviving bits ending up on "Retrace". My wish was to create an album that continued and concluded what I'd begun on "Aftersolstice" while trying to reinvent rather than repeat myself. I'd just decided to discontinue H.N.A.S because I was feeling that our music was in danger of sounding formulaic.

The pieces IV, I, II and III each were intended to represent some reflections on each of the four seasons. At the time I did not think about this much but in retrospect I find it curious that "II" (representing summer, clearly my least favorite season) is by far the longest piece of the suite and also took way more time than the others to complete.
